The Online Editors Alliance has expressed deep concern and strong condemnation over public threats made by a leader of the National Citizen Party (NCP) against journalists and the media.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 8, Alliance President Hasan Sharif and General Secretary Mizanur Rahman Sohel emphasized that the media serves as the fourth pillar of the state and is an essential component of a democratic framework. They noted that if anyone feels aggrieved by a media report, there are lawful avenues such as the Press Council and courts to seek redress. They stressed that intimidation or threats cannot be used as a means to curtail the scope of independent journalism.
They further stated that free journalism and the right to free expression are cornerstones of any democratic society. Any attempt by individuals or groups to instill fear or issue threats is a direct violation of democratic values and constitutionally guaranteed rights—something that cannot be tolerated under any circumstances.
