BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir reiterated his stance that elections are inevitable, saying, “As I said yesterday, I say again today—elections will happen. Who gets to lead afterward is a different matter.”

He made the remarks on Sunday while attending a program at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital. The previous day, while speaking at an event at the National Press Club, Fakhrul warned that delays in holding elections were escalating the national crisis. He emphasized that Professor Muhammad Yunus should step in as the chief adviser to restore democratic order.

The Sunday program titled “People’s Uprising 2024: National Unity and Democratic Journey; Evergreen Memories of Martyrs”, was organized by Krishak Dal and a platform called “We Are BNP Family”. It was held at the mausoleum of former President Ziaur Rahman, where a neem tree was planted in memory of each martyr.

In his speech, Fakhrul issued strong condemnation against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, calling her a “disgrace to humanity” and declaring that she can “never be forgiven.” He insisted justice must be served.

Referring to testimonies shared at a recent program, Fakhrul recounted the tragic story of a grieving mother who lost her son during the July protest. “They shot him down, and without checking if he was alive or dead, they loaded other bodies onto a van and set it ablaze,” he said. “The police, who are paid with our tax money and meant to protect citizens, were the ones who committed this barbaric act.”

He described the incident as brutal and inhumane, asserting that such cruelty can never be pardoned. “Our foremost duty is to bring those responsible to justice. Second, we must rehabilitate the families of the martyrs and provide proper medical care to the injured. If we fail to do this, the nation will never forgive us,” he added.

Fakhrul concluded by announcing that BNP has launched a special fund to support the families of those injured or killed in the July movement.
