In a sharp move, U.S. President Donald Trump has declared a 25% tariff on Indian exports, calling it a “penalty.” In response, the Indian government has stated it is closely monitoring the situation and is prepared to take all necessary actions to safeguard the nation’s interests.
According to a report by Indian news outlet NDTV on Wednesday evening (July 30), New Delhi issued a brief statement following Trump’s announcement, noting the development and reaffirming its commitment to fair trade negotiations.
India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry emphasized that while they have taken note of President Trump’s remarks, discussions toward a mutually beneficial trade agreement with the U.S. have been ongoing and will continue.
“The government has observed the statement made by the President of the United States regarding bilateral trade. The impact of this decision is being reviewed. India remains committed to achieving a fair, balanced, and mutually advantageous trade deal,” read the statement.
It further added, “India will take all steps necessary to defend its national interest, as it has done in past trade agreements, including the recent comprehensive economic partnership with the UK.”
