Heavy traffic congestion gripped Dhaka on Sunday as multiple political and cultural programmes took place across the city, coinciding with the first working day of the week.

Two major political rallies and a cultural gathering—held to commemorate the July-August mass uprising—significantly disrupted vehicular movement in key areas including Shyamoli, Kalyanpur, Farmgate, Banani, Mohakhali, and Gulshan.

Supporters of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), the student wing of the BNP, arrived in small processions from different parts of the country to join their central rally scheduled to begin at 2:00 PM at the Shahbagh intersection.

Meanwhile, roads near the rally sites became heavily congested, stranding thousands of commuters. In response, law enforcement agencies heightened security across affected areas and imposed traffic restrictions on several major roads to minimize public disruption.

Later in the day, the National Citizen Party (NCP) held a gathering at the Central Shaheed Minar from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, calling for the formal announcement of the “July Declaration and Charter.”

Additionally, Saimum Shilpigoshthi, a cultural group affiliated with Jamaat-e-Islami, hosted a programme titled “July Awakening” at Suhrawardy Udyan as part of the day’s observances.
