Elephant attack victims transported by air to Dhaka for urgent care

Two veterinary surgeons and a wildlife activist who were seriously injured by a wild elephant near the Bangladesh-Myanmar border in Cox’s Bazar have been airlifted to Dhaka for advanced medical care, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) said in a press release.

The incident occurred Friday afternoon in the Baluchhara Dakshin hills of the Rajarkul Thoingyakata area in Ramu upazila. The team had been attempting to treat an elephant that was previously injured by a landmine explosion along the border.

The injured include Dr. Hatem Sajjat Md Julkarnaine from Dulahazra Safari Park, Dr. Md Mostafizur Rahman from Gazipur Safari Park, and Md Atikur Rahman, member secretary of the Cox’s Bazar unit of Save the Nature of Bangladesh.

They were transported to Dhaka by a BGB helicopter from Ramu Cantonment around 1:00 pm on Friday.

“Alongside securing the border, BGB is committed to providing humanitarian support whenever needed,” the statement said.
