BNP Serves Show-Cause Notice to Fazlur Rahman, Seeks Response Within 24 Hours
Dhaka, August 24, 2025 — The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has issued a show-cause notice to Fazlur Rahman, a member of the party chairperson’s advisory council, over what the party described as “inappropriate and discipline-violating remarks.”
According to BNP sources, Rahman has been asked to explain within 24 hours why organizational action should not be taken against him.
The notice alleges that Rahman has repeatedly made controversial statements on social media regarding the historic July–August mass uprising, including comments that the party says insult the memory of martyrs and misrepresent BNP’s ideological position. It further accuses him of making remarks that undermine public sentiment and even hurt religious sensitivities.
The letter points out that during the July–August uprising, more than 1,500 people, including over 450 BNP leaders and activists, lost their lives, while about 30,000 others were seriously injured. The notice accuses Rahman of “dishonoring and belittling the heroic role of students and people in the struggle for the restoration of democracy.”
Citing his “unfounded and undisciplined statements,” the party directed him to submit a written reply to BNP’s central office in Naya Paltan within the next 24 hours.
When contacted for comment around 5:45 pm Sunday, Fazlur Rahman told Prothom Alo, “I have heard about the notice, but I have not received it yet. So I do not wish to comment at this moment.”
