Chattogram Port Drops to 68th in Global Container Rankings

Chattogram Port has slipped one place to 68th in the worldwide ranking of container ports, according to the Lloyd’s List One Hundred Ports 2025 report released on Saturday, 30 August.

In 2024, Chattogram handled 3.275 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), up 7.4% from 3.05 million TEUs in 2023. The port’s containers were processed through its four dedicated terminals, along with the Kamalapur inland depot and Pangaon river terminal.

Despite this growth, Chattogram fell in the rankings as other ports recorded faster increases. Its highest global position in the past decade was 58th in 2019.

Globally, the top 100 ports handled 743.6 million TEUs in 2024, showing an average growth of 8% compared to the previous year. Shanghai maintained its lead with 51.5 million TEUs, followed by Singapore with 41.1 million TEUs. At the bottom, Chile’s San Antonio port moved 1.8 million TEUs.

While the Lloyd’s List ranking focuses solely on container volumes rather than service quality, experts consider it a key indicator of economic activity, as containers largely carry industrial raw materials and high-value trade goods.

Chattogram remains Bangladesh’s main container port, handling 99% of the nation’s containerized cargo, with Mongla Port accounting for the remainder.

When contacted, Chattogram Port Secretary Omar Faruk said the authority had not yet received formal notification from Lloyd’s List. “Once we receive the information, we will respond accordingly,” he noted.
