Shibir-backed Vice President candidate Sadiq Kayem has claimed that students at Dhaka University will bring about a “ballot revolution” in the upcoming Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) and hall council elections.
Speaking on Sunday (September 7) during the final day of campaigning at the university’s Faculty of Social Sciences, Kayem said their 36-point reform manifesto had received a strong response from students. “On the 9th, students will create a ballot revolution,” he asserted.
Kayem alleged that images of female candidates from their panel had been tampered with, yet no action was taken. He further claimed that their candidates were receiving threats and that political leaders were pressuring students over the phone to vote for a particular group. “From the start, the Election Commission has been favoring one group. If this continues, we fear the election won’t be fair,” he warned.
Elsewhere, independent candidates from the Student Unity panel campaigned at Curzon Hall, where VP candidate Umama Fatema also criticized political leaders for contacting students to influence their votes.
At the iconic Bat Tola, student leaders from the BNP-backed panel held an oath-taking ceremony with 205 DUCSU and hall council candidates, pledging to fulfill an 18-point manifesto if elected.
Meanwhile, the Dhaka University Teacher Network held a press conference at Madhur Canteen, presenting 10 recommendations for a fair election, including keeping campus entry points open and taking immediate action against election-related rumors.
