After nearly five days of continuous rainfall, the intensity of heavy showers has eased since Wednesday. Still, scattered rain is occurring across different parts of the country, though the heat hasn’t dropped much. The Meteorological Department has forecast that light rain may fall in some regions today, Friday. Meanwhile, there are early signs of another low-pressure system forming over the sea, this time likely to develop closer to Bangladesh’s coast.
At the beginning of this month, temperatures started to rise as rainfall decreased. But from Saturday night (September 13), rainfall picked up again across the country, with almost all regions receiving showers. Chattogram, Sandwip, and Nikli in Kishoreganj recorded more than 100 millimeters, while Dhaka also experienced heavy rain. However, by Wednesday, the rainfall began to taper off.
Yesterday, Sylhet recorded the highest rainfall at 52 millimeters, while Dhaka saw only 2 millimeters. A little rain fell in Rangpur, Mymensingh, and Sylhet, but Chattogram, Barishal, and Khulna divisions remained mostly dry.
Today, the weather office has forecast scattered rainfall in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions. According to meteorologist A K M Nazmul Haque, the rainfall will be light and intermittent, a pattern expected to last for another two to three days.
Earlier this month, a low-pressure system had formed in the Bay of Bengal, but it did not affect Bangladesh. Now, forecasters expect another one to develop in the sea around next Tuesday or Wednesday. Based on current models, it may form near the coastal areas of Khulna before drifting toward India’s West Bengal and Odisha coasts.
If this system develops, it could bring more rain, possibly around September 26 and 27. However, meteorologists caution that it is too early to predict the exact impact of the low-pressure system.
