Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Choudhury has identified corruption as the most pressing issue in Bangladesh, stating that it is deeply embedded in every level of society. He emphasized that if corruption could be effectively controlled, the country would have made much greater progress. Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, June 10, after visiting Gacha Police Station in Gazipur City, he warned that no one involved in corruption within the police force, including those engaged in unethical practices like trading cases, would be spared. He mentioned that 84 officers of various ranks have already been reassigned, and he has personally sent 30 to 40 officers home, with no hesitation to take similar action against more if necessary. Addressing police reforms, he explained that a pilot project is underway to modernize the system, including the introduction of online processes for filing cases and general diaries (GDs), which now allows people to file from home, reducing harassment at police stations. In response to a question about delays in investigating cases related to post-August 5 anti-discrimination protests, the adviser explained that previous police cases often listed a few names alongside numerous unidentified individuals. This time, complainants themselves have provided 10-15 names, but still included hundreds of unnamed suspects, complicating investigations. He assured that efforts are being made to ensure that the guilty face justice, while innocent people are protected from wrongful punishment.
