On Thursday, June 12, Home Affairs Adviser Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury addressed the media during a visit to the Salna Highway Police Station and barracks in Gazipur. He stated that individuals being pushed in from India are not entering Bangladesh through proper legal channels, describing the method of their entry as inhumane.
He clarified that Bangladesh is willing to accept its citizens who are currently in India, but they must return through official procedures. Instead, he said, these people are being forced into Bangladesh through forests and roadside areas, which is unacceptable.
The Adviser mentioned that the issue has already been brought to the attention of Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka, Pranay Verma. Additionally, Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Tawhid Hossain has also communicated with him regarding this concern.
He further noted that the government has taken steps to increase health safety awareness at airports and other points of entry to prevent the spread of COVID-19, particularly among travelers coming from India and other countries.
When asked about BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman’s possible return to Bangladesh, the Home Affairs Adviser stated that there are no restrictions on his return. He emphasized that Tarique Rahman is a Bangladeshi citizen and may come back whenever he chooses.
He also urged journalists to provide complete and accurate reports, warning that partial or fragmented news can be misused by neighboring countries to serve their own interests.
During his visit, the Adviser was accompanied by senior police officials, including Gazipur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Dr. Nazmul Karim Khan, Highway Police DIG Shafiqul Islam, and Superintendent of Police Zaber Sadek. Later, he also visited the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Gazipur Battalion and the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture.
