Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Adviser to the Ministry of Home Affairs, has said that police personnel are being trained in preparation for the upcoming national election.
Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat on Sunday (July 20), the adviser emphasized that there is still time before the polls, and that the current security forces are capable of ensuring a free and fair election.
“We are equipping the police through training and preparing all necessary measures to handle the situation surrounding the elections,” he stated.
When asked about the recent clashes during a National Citizen Party (NCP) gathering in Gopalganj, Jahangir Alam stressed that no innocent individuals were being arrested.
He acknowledged the incident, saying, “Yes, something happened in Gopalganj — we admit that. Politics often involves such events, but what matters is whether proper action is taken afterwards.”
He added that an official committee will determine whether or not a formal case will be filed in relation to the incident.
The adviser further noted that the situation in Gopalganj has returned to normal, although Section 144 (emergency prohibitory orders) remains in effect. “Depending on how things evolve, the restriction will be gradually lifted,” he assured.
