ACC Launches Probe Against Dhaka Customs Commissioner

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has launched an inquiry against Dhaka Customs Commissioner Muhammad Zakir Hossain over allegations of embezzlement amounting to crores of taka from the VAT Online Project and other misconduct. According to ACC sources on Monday (May 19), Assistant Director Abu Bakar Siddique is leading the investigation. Zakir Hossain is accused of establishing multiple companies under various names to manipulate the award of contracts in the VAT Online Project, allegedly securing hundreds of crores in the process. These irregularities reportedly took place during the tenure of former NBR Chairman Najibur Rahman, when Hossain was in charge of the project. In a separate development, the ACC has also begun probing former LGED chief engineers Wahidur Rahman and Ali Akhtar Hossain for allegedly amassing illegal wealth worth over a hundred crore taka.
