A Dhaka court has dismissed a case against content creator Shahin Mahmud, which was filed under the Cyber Security Ordinance for allegedly posting derogatory remarks on Facebook about BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman.

Judge Mohammad Saidur Rahman Gazi of the Dhaka Cyber Tribunal ruled that the case lacked the proper documentation, Md Juwel Miah, bench assistant of the tribunal, told The Times of Dhaka.

The case had been filed yesterday by Eltut Mish, a leader of a pro-BNP lawyers’ group. The tribunal also recorded statements from the complainant.

According to the filed documents, on November 12, Tarique Rahman delivered a virtual speech at a party rally, stating that “ensuring fair prices for potatoes is more important than holding a referendum” under the current circumstances.

Three days later, Shahin Mahmud posted on his verified Facebook account, suggesting that if the Tk 88 crore spent on a bulletproof car had instead been given to farmers, they would have received fair prices for onions and potatoes.

The complaint claimed that Shahin’s post contained false and derogatory remarks intended to tarnish Tarique Rahman’s dignity, patriotism, and political judgment. The case also argued that no bulletproof car was actually purchased for the claimed amount.
