BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has expressed optimism that Bangladesh’s ongoing gas and electricity crisis will be resolved within the coming weeks, stating that normal energy supplies are expected to return by the second week of September. Speaking to reporters after paying tribute at the graves of former President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia on the occasion of the BNP’s 48th founding anniversary, Rizvi said the current energy shortages are largely the result of global geopolitical tensions rather than government policy failures. He pointed to the ongoing conflict involving Iran and disruptions around the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, which have affected international fuel shipments and energy supply chains. According to Rizvi, some fuel-carrying vessels faced security threats while attempting to navigate the region, contributing to the shortages experienced in Bangladesh. He also highlighted the government’s efforts to address the situation, noting that approximately Tk 40,000 crore has been allocated to support the energy sector and ensure fuel availability. Rizvi further revealed that technical repairs at the Maheshkhali Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) have been completed and that regasification activities have already resumed. As a result, he expects gas supplies to improve significantly during the first half of September, which would also stabilize electricity generation and reduce load-shedding. The BNP leader said early signs of improvement are already becoming visible and expressed confidence that the government, under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, will continue overcoming challenges and steering the country forward despite global economic and energy pressures.
