In a case involving allegations of bribery to secure acquittal in a murder case, BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, former State Minister for Home Lutfozzaman Babar, and six others have been acquitted. On Thursday morning (March 20), the Special Judge Court-3 delivered the verdict, stating that there were no remaining charges against Tarique Rahman and Babar in the case, as confirmed by the BNP’s legal representatives.

The charge sheet claimed that a bribe of 21 crore Taka was accepted to secure immunity for Safiat Sobhan Sanvir, the accused in the murder of Bashundhara Group director Engineer Sabbir. The case was filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) during the period of the 1/11 emergency government.

BNP lawyer Borhan Uddin stated that the ACC could not provide any evidence or testimony against the accused, which led to their acquittal. As a result, there are no legal barriers preventing Tarique Rahman from returning to politics in Bangladesh.
