BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir stated that the Awami League has become isolated from the public due to its “murder of democracy and mass killings.” He remarked this on Saturday while paying respects to the nation’s intellectual martyrs at the Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals Memorial.
On the topic of elections, he emphasized the need to create a conducive environment for elections based on the will of the people. “We remain hopeful,” he said, “that a fair, credible, and impartial election will soon be organized, allowing the people to choose their representatives.”
Reflecting on historical events, Mirza Fakhrul said, “On this day in 1971, just before our final victory, the Pakistani occupation forces targeted and killed renowned journalists, intellectuals, professors, scientists, and eminent figures of civil society in Bangladesh. We lost some of the brightest minds of our nation.”
He further noted, “The movement on July 36 and August 5 has paved the way to defeat fascist forces, giving us an opportunity to build a truly democratic, modern, and egalitarian Bangladesh.”
During the tribute, BNP leaders, including Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Standing Committee Members Nazrul Islam Khan and Dr. Moin Khan, and leaders of the Dhaka metropolitan units, joined Mirza Fakhrul in honoring the martyrs. The party conveyed its respects on behalf of Chairperson Khaleda Zia and Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, while also praying for the forgiveness of the martyrs.
