Once known as a vibrant hub for sports, exercise and recreation, the historic Dhupkhola Field in Dhaka’s Gendaria area is now facing growing criticism from local residents who allege that parts of the ground have become a hotspot for drug use and illegal drug transactions after sunset.

According to residents, overgrown bushes and poorly lit corners of the field provide cover for groups of individuals who regularly gather there. Locals claim that substances including cannabis and yaba are allegedly being consumed and traded in the area, raising concerns about public safety.

Parents say they are increasingly reluctant to bring their children to the field, citing the presence of unfamiliar individuals and what they describe as suspicious activities taking place in certain sections of the grounds.

Members of local sports organizations also report difficulties during evening training sessions. They say athletes and young people often feel uncomfortable due to the alleged presence of drug users near practice areas.

Residents argue that without stronger monitoring and enforcement, the situation could deteriorate further and negatively impact the community, particularly young people who use the field for sports and recreation.

Many locals claim that concerns have been raised repeatedly in the past, but visible and long-term solutions have yet to materialize.

To restore safety, community members are calling for regular police patrols, improved lighting throughout the field and the installation of CCTV cameras. They believe these measures could help return Dhupkhola Field to its former role as a safe and welcoming space for families, children and sports enthusiasts.
