The intensity of winter has increased across the country, including the capital, with northern regions experiencing a notable chill. Fog blanketed the capital until mid-morning on Friday, after which the sun became visible. However, in many northern areas, the sun remained obscured. Currently, two northern districts are experiencing a cold wave.
Yesterday, Dhaka’s temperature dropped by approximately 2°C compared to the previous day, with the minimum temperature recorded at 13.8°C. The country’s lowest temperature, 10.7°C, was recorded in Baghabari, Sirajganj. Today, the temperature in Baghabari fell further to 9.6°C, indicating a decline of nearly 1°C within 24 hours.
The Meteorological Department has forecasted persistent fog across parts of the country, with temperatures expected to decrease further from Saturday. Light to moderate cold waves may affect a few areas, with temperatures expected to rise again after January 28.
Meteorologist Shahnaz Sultana stated that winter would gradually subside from February. Currently, mild cold waves are affecting Sirajganj and Panchagarh, with temperatures of 10°C in Panchagarh’s Tetulia. According to meteorological standards, areas with minimum temperatures between 8.1°C and 10°C experience mild cold waves, while 6.1°C to 8°C indicates moderate cold waves. Severe cold waves occur between 4.1°C and 6°C, and extremely severe ones are recorded when temperatures fall below 4°C.
This January has seen only one moderate cold wave, with overall winter intensity relatively low. Last December, temperatures were 0.7°C above average. Looking ahead, February’s longer daylight hours are expected to raise temperatures, though predictions of cold waves for the month remain uncertain.
