Police use sound grenades to disperse protesting MATS students

Medical Assistant Training School (MATS) students staged a protest at Shahbagh intersection in the capital, demanding four key points, including higher education opportunities and the immediate recruitment of Sub-Assistant Community Medical Officers for vacant positions. However, after receiving no response from the government, they began marching toward the Secretariat. As they reached the Mausoleum of the Father of the Nation (Mausi Mor), police fired sound grenades at them.
The incident occurred around 4:30 PM on Sunday (February 9), injuring several students, including female protesters. According to the students, at least two of their peers were wounded by police gunfire and were taken to BIRDEM Hospital for treatment.
Expressing their outrage, the protesters questioned why police opened fire on them when they were demonstrating for legitimate demands. They strongly condemned the attack.
Currently, the students are divided into two groups—one group remains at Shahbagh, while the other has taken position on the main road in front of Curzon Hall. Earlier in the day, they gathered in the Farmgate area before moving to block the Shahbagh intersection around 11 AM.
