Two U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretaries of State are scheduled to arrive in Dhaka on Wednesday for a three-day visit, marking the first such delegation from the Trump administration to Bangladesh. Their visit is expected to cover a range of key issues, including political reforms and democratic transition in Bangladesh, retaliatory tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, U.S. support for the Rohingya crisis, and the broader Myanmar situation, along with various aspects of Dhaka-Washington bilateral ties.

According to diplomatic sources, Nicole Chulick, Deputy Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs, will arrive first, followed later by Andrew Herrup, Deputy Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs. Herrup will be accompanied by Susan Stevenson, the U.S. Chargé d’Affaires in Myanmar.

On the first day, both officials will meet with U.S. embassy staff in Dhaka to discuss the country’s political and socio-economic conditions. They are also expected to engage in separate meetings with leaders from various political parties, including the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami, as well as members of civil society.

On Thursday, the delegation will hold discussions with top government officials, including Foreign Affairs Advisor Towhid Hossain and National Security Advisor Khaleelur Rahman. The meetings are likely to address bilateral trade concerns, particularly retaliatory tariffs, and U.S. perspectives on ongoing reforms in Bangladesh.

Chulick is expected to focus on U.S. support for Bangladesh’s ongoing democratic reforms and the role of the interim government, seeking ways the U.S. can assist the transition process. Meanwhile, Herrup’s agenda will emphasize the security and humanitarian challenges arising from the deteriorating situation in Myanmar, including drug trafficking, arms smuggling, kidnappings, human trafficking, and the unresolved Rohingya refugee crisis.
