Ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, Dhaka’s upscale shopping malls have seen a surge in panjabi sales. Alongside the growing number of shoppers, the unusually high prices have also become a major talking point. This year, the boutique brand “House of Ahmed” in Banani has drawn particular attention, with prices starting at around 6,500 taka and reaching up to 500,000 taka.

The brand’s outlet, located on Road 12 in Banani, features premium panjabis made from high-quality fabrics with intricate zardozi and fine embroidery. Each piece takes several months—sometimes even a year—to complete, and customers often need to place orders in advance for these exclusive designs.

Managing Director and designer Ahmed Tuhin Reza said the high cost reflects the time, craftsmanship, and skilled labor involved. He added that the brand aims to elevate fashion standards and offers customization options, including converting panjabis into sherwanis at an additional cost.

Sales remain steady, supported by a loyal customer base. This year, the brand has also introduced jamdani panjabis to enhance the Eid collection.

Another store in the same building, “Zurheim,” offers panjabis ranging from 5,000 to over 100,000 taka, with discounts on older collections. They emphasize hand craftsmanship, comfort, and limited-edition designs.

Beyond Banani, various brands across Dhaka—including in Gulshan, Jamuna Future Park, and Bashundhara Shopping Mall—are offering panjabis in a wide price range, from around 2,000 taka to 50,000 taka or more.

Shoppers say they are exploring different outlets for quality options, though finding the right balance between price and preference remains a challenge. Overall, Dhaka’s Eid market reflects a mix of luxury and variety, catering to different tastes and budgets.
