No Impact on Bangladesh from India’s Transshipment Decision: Trade Adviser

Bangladesh’s Trade Adviser, Sheikh Bashiruddin, commented that the sudden cancellation of transshipment by India will not cause problems for Bangladesh. He mentioned that discussions were held with business leaders from various sectors, including buyers, on April 8. Bangladesh will try to mitigate the issue using its own resources.
He further emphasized that Bangladesh is working towards ensuring that its competitive edge remains intact by enhancing its commercial capacity and ensuring smooth connectivity. When asked about the steps to address the cancellation of India’s transshipment order, which was issued on June 29, 2020, and later revoked by India’s Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) on April 7, 2025, the trade adviser explained that the country is addressing infrastructure-related concerns and increased costs, hoping to overcome the challenges.
Regarding any retaliatory actions from Bangladesh, such as suspending transshipment or transit, the adviser stated that this is not his responsibility and that his focus is on strengthening the country’s capacity. When asked about sending a letter to India, he mentioned that at this time, such an action is not being considered, as Bangladesh is benefiting from a temporary tariff suspension by the U.S., providing some immediate relief and time for further discussions.
