Dhaka University VC Urges Students to Vote Freely in Ducsu Election Tomorrow
The long-awaited Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) election will be held tomorrow, Tuesday. On the eve of the polls, Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof Niaz Ahmed Khan has called on students to come to polling centres without fear and exercise their right to vote.
In a video message released this afternoon on the university’s official Facebook page, the VC said the whole nation is watching Dhaka University.
“You, the students, wanted this election and worked for it with high expectations. Ducsu reflects the spirit of mass movements—it is about institutionalising democratic aspirations and creating a collective voice against injustice. This is your election. Come without hesitation, we are waiting for you. Through this process, you will continue DU’s long tradition of contributing to the strengthening of democracy,” he said.
Special Arrangements for Female Voters
Prof Niaz noted that special measures have been taken for female students at polling centres. “The entire country has placed its trust in us, and we must honour that trust. Despite many obstacles, we have reached this point,” he added.
Why the Polls Are Historic
Describing the election as historic, he explained:
“This year’s polls are unique for many reasons. There will be 810 booths with nearly 40,000 voters. For the first time, voting will be organised centrally across eight combined centres outside the residential halls. We have taken maximum steps to ensure transparency—CCTV monitoring, three layers of security, and trained polling officials.”
Assurances of Fairness
He stressed that the election commission is neutral and widely respected. “This time the commission includes 10 commissioners, including the chief returning officer, representing diverse views. Ballot counting will be open for all to see through live TV coverage, with journalists closely observing the process.”
Call for Acceptance of Results
Addressing candidates, the VC urged them to accept both victory and defeat:
“We have come this far by standing together. Some candidates will win, some will not—but both sides have important roles in activating this democratic institution. After many years, we are witnessing a historic electoral process. That in itself is a major achievement.”
