Authorities have been instructed to place special emphasis on arresting identified individuals who opened fire on students and civilians during the July mass uprising. At the same time, efforts have been ordered to intensify action against professional criminals and bring them under the law. In line with these directives, intelligence agencies have begun identifying illegal arms supply routes and tracing the sources of their financial backing.
Alongside this, law enforcement agencies are prioritising the recovery of weapons looted from police during the July unrest. According to police data, a total of 1,337 missing firearms have yet to be recovered, including nearly 400 pistols.
Relevant police sources say that, in addition to concerns over new weapons entering the country, authorities are also closely examining whether the looted arms are being used in criminal activities. These issues will receive particular attention during ongoing operations.
Strong message at field level
Political parties have also called for tougher operations to recover illegal weapons and take action against those involved in conspiracies. They have demanded ensured security for key leaders and national election candidates. Taken together, maintaining normal law and order during the election period has emerged as a major challenge, prompting the government to give the matter special consideration.
A source at police headquarters said firm instructions have been issued at the field level to ensure public safety at any cost.
When asked about these measures, Inspector General of Police Baharul Alam told Prothom Alo, “The police will do everything necessary to ensure a free and fair election. Any attempt to derail the election will not be allowed to succeed. Strict instructions have been given at the ground level. The police will make their utmost effort to ensure that voters and candidates can carry out their election activities smoothly and safely.”
