US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan will visit New Delhi from January 5-6. The United States and its Western allies view India as a key partner in countering China’s growing influence, particularly in Asia. Sullivan’s visit is expected to strengthen this stance. A US official mentioned that Chinese dams, particularly in the Mekong region, could negatively impact the environment and climate, especially for lower riparian countries. These issues will be discussed with Indian representatives.

The official also confirmed that the US will address concerns raised by India during the visit. China has proposed a large project, similar to the Three Gorges Dam, on the Yarlung Zangbo River (known as the Brahmaputra in India). The project, with an estimated cost of $34.83 billion, would affect the river’s course through Arunachal Pradesh and Assam in India before entering Bangladesh. China claims its dams will not significantly impact the environment or water supply downstream. However, India has expressed concerns over these projects and has emphasized that downstream countries have rights to shared rivers. The Indian government has also intensified efforts to implement hydroelectric projects in Arunachal Pradesh to counter China’s initiatives, even as both countries compete in upstream dam construction. India’s dams, built over the years, have had significant impacts on Bangladesh, raising concerns about its rightful share of water resources.
