The ongoing conflict in Myanmar has displaced over 3.5 million people, marking an increase of 1.5 million compared to 2023, as reported by the United Nations on Friday. The UN has expressed concerns that the humanitarian crisis in Myanmar could worsen further. Since the military coup in 2021, which ousted Aung San Suu Kyi’s government, instability has gripped the country, and armed resistance movements have intensified in the fight for democracy. In 2024, the conflict has spread across the country, with most regions affected. The UN’s humanitarian agency OCHA reports that millions have been forced to flee their homes in search of safety and basic needs, seeking refuge in neighboring countries like Bangladesh. As of December 16, 2024, an estimated 3.5 million people have been displaced, making up nearly 6% of Myanmar’s population of 57 million, with a third of them being children. The UN has warned that the situation may worsen in 2025, potentially leading to an unprecedented humanitarian disaster due to ongoing conflict, disasters, pandemics, widespread explosions, weaponry, and economic collapse.
