US President Donald Trump has announced a Saturday deadline to impose 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada, aiming to pressure both countries to curb illegal migration and fentanyl shipments into the United States. On January 30, Trump stated that these tariffs would be implemented for multiple reasons and could fluctuate over time.
He also mentioned he was evaluating whether to exclude Canadian and Mexican oil from the tariffs, with a decision expected soon. The final determination would depend on factors such as oil prices and how both countries treat the United States in trade matters.
Additionally, Trump reiterated his consideration of new tariffs on Chinese goods, accusing China of facilitating fentanyl trafficking, which he claims has caused significant deaths in the U.S. He suggested that China would face tariffs as a consequence, with plans currently in progress.
While Chinese President Xi Jinping previously committed to working with then-President Joe Biden in 2023 to address fentanyl shipments, China has urged the U.S. to focus on reducing domestic demand for the drug. Meanwhile, Mexico’s economy ministry declined to comment on Trump’s latest statements, and the office of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was not immediately available for a response.
