Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has reportedly left Damascus, according to Reuters. On Sunday, Assad departed the capital, but his destination remains unknown. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights indicated that a private aircraft departed Damascus International Airport, possibly carrying Assad. Following the plane’s takeoff, government forces were reportedly withdrawn from the airport.
Quoting two senior Syrian officials, Reuters confirmed that President Assad boarded a flight to an undisclosed location. This departure has sparked celebrations in Damascus, particularly in the central Umayyad Square, where residents are seen rejoicing. Social media footage shows loud music playing as people dance around an abandoned tank reportedly left behind by government forces.
Reports also highlight that thousands of citizens have taken to the streets, chanting slogans of freedom. Opposition fighters claim to have entered Damascus unopposed, declaring the end of Assad’s rule and the release of political prisoners. Celebrations are also tied to the liberation of the Sednaya military prison near Damascus, where over 3,500 detainees have been freed.
Rebel commander Hassan Abdul Ghani announced on social media platform X that Homs is now “completely liberated.” Meanwhile, opposition leader Hadi al-Bahra declared Damascus “free from Bashar al-Assad.” Addressing the Syrian people, he confirmed the collapse of Assad’s regime and urged against acts of vengeance, emphasizing that this marks the end of a dark chapter in Syria’s history. He further stated plans to rebuild the military and restore stability.
