Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad fled the country on Sunday morning, as rebel fighters neared the capital, Damascus. Assad, who had been in power for 24 years, followed the long reign of his father, Hafez al-Assad, who ruled Syria for 29 years. His departure marks the end of 53 years of Assad family rule. Global reactions have been mixed, with some leaders expressing joy, while others are concerned about the potential chaos as power shifts to rebel groups.
U.S. President Joe Biden stated that he and his administration are closely monitoring the situation in Syria, maintaining communication with regional leaders. U.S. Democratic Congressman Brendan Boyle expressed hope, saying the ousting of Assad’s government represents a major opportunity for the Syrian people to determine their future.
The Taliban, who are currently in power in Afghanistan, have voiced support for the Syrian rebels and expect them to implement Sharia law, similar to the Taliban’s rule. Meanwhile, newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Assad fled due to losing Russian support, with no interest from Russia, under President Vladimir Putin, in continuing to protect him.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called it a historic day for the Middle East, marking the collapse of Assad’s regime. Iraq’s spokesperson, Bassem Al-Awadi, urged non-interference in Syria’s internal matters and emphasized that they were closely watching the situation. Israel’s Foreign Minister, Eli Cohen, highlighted the increasing control of al-Qaeda and ISIS-linked groups over Syria’s territories.
Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said he had been following the situation closely, staying in constant contact with the embassy in Damascus. The Philippines’ Department of Foreign Affairs expressed concern for Filipino citizens in Syria, advising them to exercise caution and stay in touch with the Philippine embassy.
