A powerful earthquake struck Myanmar, leaving over a thousand dead and at least two thousand injured. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has warned that the death toll could exceed 10,000. The earthquake, measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale, hit northwestern Sagaing at 12:50 PM local time on Friday, with a depth of 10 kilometers. Minutes later, a 6.4-magnitude aftershock and several smaller tremors followed.
The quake also affected neighboring Thailand and was felt in Bangladesh, China, and Vietnam. Most casualties were reported in Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, which is closest to the epicenter. The tremors were so strong that they shook buildings as far west as India and as far east as China, Cambodia, and Laos.
Rescue workers in Myanmar and Thailand are still searching for survivors, often using their bare hands to dig through the rubble, according to BBC reports. Meanwhile, Myanmar’s military government has appealed for international aid, and assistance has started arriving. The United States, Russia, and the European Union have pledged support, while India has already sent relief supplies, and a Chinese rescue team has arrived.
In Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, a construction site partially collapsed due to the earthquake, leaving around 100 workers missing. So far, six people have been confirmed dead. Search and rescue efforts continue.
