South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has been impeached following a second round of voting in the country’s parliament, where 204 lawmakers supported the motion. However, he will not be immediately removed from office. According to BBC and AFP reports, Yoon has been temporarily suspended from his duties as president, and the constitutional court will now review the impeachment proceedings.

During the parliamentary vote, held on Saturday afternoon, 204 out of 300 lawmakers voted in favor of impeachment, while 85 opposed it. Three lawmakers abstained, and eight votes were declared invalid. Prime Minister Han Duck-soo will serve as the interim leader while the court deliberates.

The constitutional court has up to 180 days to reach a verdict on the matter. If six of the nine judges on the council uphold the impeachment, Yoon will be permanently removed from office, and South Korea will need to hold a new presidential election within 60 days.

Earlier, on December 3, President Yoon declared martial law, only to revoke it within six hours amid widespread opposition from lawmakers and public protests. Opposition members of parliament, defying police and military barriers, entered the legislative chamber to overturn the decision. This event triggered renewed calls for Yoon’s resignation across the nation.

Just days ago, on December 7, Yoon narrowly avoided impeachment during the first attempt, as lawmakers from the ruling People Power Party (PPP) boycotted the session. However, with the second vote now passed, his fate hinges on the upcoming constitutional court review.
