Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has emphasized the importance of preventing war-torn Syria from becoming a hub for terrorism while continuing the fight against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and the Islamic State (ISIS). Speaking at a press conference following discussions with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday, Erdoğan highlighted that combating ISIS and the PKK, along with its affiliates, was a key topic of their meeting.

He stressed that Turkey remains Syria’s sole ally capable of defeating these terrorist groups and vowed to ensure they do not re-emerge. Erdoğan also called for greater international cooperation, urging Syria’s neighbors, allies, and the global community, particularly the European Union, to assist in rebuilding the nation and strengthening its security.

Pointing out the international community’s failure to adequately support the Syrian people during 13 years of violence, Erdoğan stated that this is an opportunity to correct past shortcomings. He underscored the need for substantial aid to rebuild Syria and confirmed Turkey’s commitment to supporting the Syrian people, revealing that Ankara has already reopened its embassy in Damascus.
