Google is planning a significant investment of $6 billion to establish a 1-gigawatt data centre in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh—its first direct data infrastructure project in India—according to a report by Reuters. Around $2 billion of this investment will reportedly be allocated toward renewable energy development to support the centre’s power needs.

If completed as planned, the Visakhapatnam facility will be the largest data centre in Asia in terms of both capacity and investment. The project is part of Google’s parent company Alphabet’s larger global strategy, which includes a $75 billion expansion of data centre infrastructure despite economic challenges and new US trade tariffs.

Reuters noted that Andhra Pradesh has already attracted commitments for 1.6 GW of data centre capacity, aiming to scale that up to 6 GW within five years. The state also intends to build undersea cable landing stations in Visakhapatnam to strengthen international data connectivity.

Although renewable energy is a core focus, state officials acknowledged to Reuters that coal-powered energy may still be required to ensure uninterrupted service for the high-demand data infrastructure. While Google has yet to release an official statement, Andhra Pradesh is reportedly preparing to make a formal announcement in October.
