Nationalist lawyers staged a protest rally and demonstration at the Supreme Court on Tuesday (April 29), demanding the immediate arrest of former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque. The protest took place in front of the Supreme Court Bar Association building and was organized by the Nationalist Lawyers Forum.
Speakers at the rally accused the former chief justice of being one of the key figures behind the destruction of democracy and human rights in the country. They called on the interim government to arrest and prosecute him without delay. The lawyers emphasized the need for a strict trial to set an example so that no future judge dares to act in a similar manner. They also warned of tougher programs if justice is not ensured.
The speakers further alleged that several judges in both the higher and lower judiciary remain loyal to partisan and authoritarian interests, demanding their immediate removal.
Notable leaders who spoke at the event included Forum President Advocate Zainul Abedin, Secretary General Barrister Kaiser Kamal, Joint Secretary Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajol, Organizing Secretary Advocate Gazi Kamrul Islam Sajal, Supreme Court Chapter Convener Barrister Badruddoza Badal, and Member Secretary Advocate Gazi Touhidul Islam, among others.
Earlier, on April 27, the Forum had announced protest programs across courts nationwide, including the Supreme Court, demanding Khairul Haque’s arrest.
