A writ petition has been filed in the High Court seeking a stay on the verdict that declared BNP leader Ishraque Hossain as the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC). The petition was filed on Wednesday, May 14, by Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Kazi Akbar Ali on behalf of one Md. Mamunur Rashid.
The original election took place on February 1, 2020, in which Awami League candidate Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh was declared the winner. However, on March 27, 2025, the Electoral Tribunal—headed by Dhaka’s First Joint District Judge Md. Nurul Islam—nullified Taposh’s victory and declared Ishraque Hossain the rightful mayor.
Following the tribunal’s ruling, the Election Commission sought legal advice from the Law Ministry on April 22 regarding the publication of a gazette. Eventually, on April 27, the EC officially issued a gazette naming Ishraque Hossain as the new DSCC mayor.
In response, the recent High Court petition aims to suspend the enforcement of that tribunal decision.
