The International Crimes Tribunal-2 on Thursday (10 July) directed that public notices be issued in newspapers summoning 26 individuals—including the former Vice Chancellor of Begum Rokeya University (BRU) and the former Police Commissioner of Rangpur—in connection with the murder case of Abu Sayeed, the first martyr of the July mass uprising.
Earlier in the day, four arrestees were produced before the tribunal: former BRU proctor Shariful Islam, former assistant sub-inspector of police Amir Hossain, police constable Sujan Chandra Roy, and Chhatra League leader Imran Chowdhury.
As 26 out of the 30 accused in the case remain absconding, the tribunal ordered that notices be published to compel their appearance.
On 24 June, the tribunal’s investigation agency submitted a report accusing 30 individuals in the Abu Sayeed murder case. On 30 June, the prosecution formally filed charges, which were accepted by Tribunal-2 the same day.
Abu Sayeed, a student of Begum Rokeya University, was shot dead by police on 16 July last year in front of the university near Park Mor during the July uprising.
