The government is giving top priority to prosecuting the killings that took place during July and August 2024, and the pace of these trials is “satisfactory,” said Law Adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul after inspecting the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Tuesday morning, September 2.

Nazrul added that the government is prepared to establish an additional tribunal if needed to accelerate trials for enforced disappearances and other crimes against humanity.

Earlier, Dr. Nazrul and Housing, Public Works, and Industries Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan visited the ICT-2 headquarters to review ongoing renovation work.

The inspection team also included Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman, ICT’s Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam, Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim, and other senior officials.

Trials for crimes against humanity committed during the July-August protests are already underway, with multiple cases moving forward. Formal charges have been framed in several cases, and witness testimony is well underway, including cases involving former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, where testimony is nearing completion.

Proceedings are currently being conducted in both ICT-1 and ICT-2, though ICT-2 is temporarily operating out of a tin-roofed facility until renovations at its main building are completed.
