Bangladesh’s electricity situation could begin improving from Wednesday evening, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit said, while apologizing for the recent power disruptions affecting millions of consumers.

Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat, the minister said adverse weather conditions in the Bay of Bengal have prevented fresh gas supplies from reaching one of the country’s floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals. A second LNG terminal has also been operating below full capacity following a technical incident, reducing overall gas availability.

The decline in gas supply has directly affected electricity generation, contributing to widespread power shortages across the country, he said.

Amit added that Bangladesh’s energy sector had already been facing structural challenges, which he attributed to policy decisions made by previous administrations. The current LNG-related disruptions and unfavorable weather conditions have further intensified the situation.

Authorities are working to increase electricity generation and gas supplies through alternative arrangements in an effort to stabilize the energy system, the minister said.

Bangladesh recently experienced load shedding exceeding 3,000 megawatts nationwide due to gas shortages, placing significant pressure on households and businesses.

Rural areas were among the hardest hit, with prolonged outages triggering public frustration in several regions. In some locations, incidents of vandalism and attacks on power plants and electrical substations were reported.

As a result, local rural electricity cooperatives have requested additional security measures to protect critical power infrastructure amid growing public discontent over the outages.
