Bangladesh’s Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A.M.M. Nasir Uddin has pledged that upcoming local government elections will be conducted in an environment even more orderly and secure than the recent national elections.

Speaking to reporters on Monday after an Election Commission event focused on preparations for local polls, the CEC said the commission is working closely with law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders before announcing the election schedule.

Extra Security Measures Planned

Nasir Uddin acknowledged that local government elections often experience higher levels of conflict and disorder compared to national elections. To address those concerns, he said the Election Commission plans to implement additional security and administrative measures to maintain law and order throughout the voting process.

“Local elections tend to be more competitive at the grassroots level, so we are preparing accordingly to ensure a peaceful and credible election,” he indicated.

By-Election for Thakurgaon-1 Seat

The CEC also confirmed that a by-election for the Thakurgaon-1 parliamentary constituency—vacated following the election of President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir—will be held within the constitutionally required 90-day timeframe.

He clarified that preparations for the by-election will not affect the scheduling or organization of local government elections, with both processes expected to move forward independently.

Election Commission Preparing Timeline

According to election officials, the final dates for local government polls will be announced once all operational and security preparations are completed.

Political observers note that the local elections will be closely watched as a test of grassroots political competition and electoral administration following the national vote.
