Truth Commission to Probe Enforced Disappearances: Legal Adviser

Interim government legal adviser Asif Nazrul announced that a Truth and Reconciliation Commission will be formed to address past injustices. Speaking at a consultation meeting on the second draft of the “Enforced Disappearance Prevention and Remedy Ordinance 2025” at the Judicial Administration Training Institute on Saturday, May 10, Nazrul emphasized the need for such a commission, referencing past calls by writer Farhad Mazhar for a truth and justice process in Bangladesh. He noted that such a commission would have been valuable since 1972 and affirmed the government’s commitment to resolving issues professionally. Nazrul also stated that he and the chief adviser will travel to South Africa to study its model of transitional justice. On the ordinance itself, he stressed the goal to make the law as strong as possible, expressing uncertainty about whether future governments would maintain its strength. He reaffirmed that the commission under this law must also be empowered, with clear intent to ensure accountability for past crimes. The meeting was attended by legal experts and ministry advisers who highlighted ambiguities and errors in the draft, warning that unresolved issues could lead to instability and public fear.
