Adviser to the Information and Broadcasting Ministry of the Interim Government, Nahid Islam, stated that the government is accountable not to any political party, but to the aspirations of the people. He emphasized that despite BNP’s pressure for an early election, the government will proceed based on the work of the reform commission. He made these remarks in an interview with private TV channel 24.
Regarding the criticism of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her party, the Awami League, for their involvement in the July-August mass killings, Nahid Islam remarked that the party has lost its moral right to do politics due to their involvement in indiscriminate killings during the student and public movements. He stated that they must not only face trial but also apologize to the people.
When asked about the various demands raised after the people’s uprising, Nahid Islam acknowledged that some are justified, but others might be linked to potential conspiracies.
In terms of media freedom, he assured that laws obstructing media independence will be reviewed. He mentioned that discussions would be held on various economic and political security matters, aiming to create a framework that would allow people to practice media freely without hindrance.
