A local court in Narayanganj has rejected the bail plea of Dr. Selina Hayat Ivy, former mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation and senior vice-president of the district Awami League. The decision was issued by Judicial Magistrate Shamsur Rahman on Monday, May 12, following a hearing at the Second Magistrate Court. Ivy’s legal team, composed of several senior High Court lawyers, including SM Siddiqur Rahman, Mahbubur Rahman Masum, Awlad Hossain, Ziaul Islam Kajol, and Shahin Mahmud, argued in her favor, describing her as a transparent political figure and highlighting her three consecutive wins as city mayor and prior role as municipality chairman. They also emphasized the overwhelming electoral support she received, often defeating rivals by nearly 100,000 votes. They claimed her arrest has deeply upset Narayanganj residents and tarnished the image of the current government. Although the bail was denied, the court instructed prison authorities to ensure Ivy receives division facilities in custody. Her legal team plans to file a fresh bail application with the District and Sessions Judge Court. Ivy was arrested early morning on May 9 from her residence in connection with the killing of a garment worker named Minarul during the July-August mass uprising last year. Her arrest sparked immediate street protests by locals. Later that day, she was presented in court and remanded to custody until the next hearing scheduled for May 26. She is currently being held at Kashimpur Jail in Gazipur.
