Three accused, including former MP ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury from Raozan, have been produced before International Crimes Tribunal-1 in connection with the killing of six people during the July 2024 public uprising in Chattogram. The tribunal is set to hear the case on Monday, July 7.
The charges stem from incidents on July 16, 2024, when activists of the Awami League, along with its affiliated wings—Jubo League, Swechchhasebak League, and Chhatra League—allegedly opened fire on protesting students and civilians in the Soloshahar and Muradpur areas of Chattogram. The violence left Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal activist Wasim Akram, Islami Chhatra Shibir member Faisal Ahmed Shanto, and local businessman Md. Faruk dead from gunshot wounds.
On July 18, further violence erupted in Bahaddarhat, Chattogram, where bullets fired by ruling party activists reportedly killed shop worker Simon, student Tanvir Siddiqui, and Hridoy Chandra Tarua, a student of Chattogram University.
Following these deadly incidents, the tribunal issued arrest warrants on March 25 against 15 individuals. Among the accused are former minister Hasan Mahmud, former Chattogram mayors A J M Nasir and Rezaul Karim, former deputy education minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, and Nurul Azim Rony, former general secretary of Chattogram Chhatra League and a current member of the central Awami League’s youth and sports sub-committee.
