Top Gangster Tarik Saif publicly shoots Mamun in dispute over criminal turf; five arrested
In a violent clash over control of the criminal underworld, top-listed gangster Tarik Saif publicly shot and killed Mamun. Mamun, recently released on bail, had been attempting to regain influence in the city’s criminal activities. According to police, the attack was carried out by Faruk and Robin for a payment of 200,000 Taka, under the direction of another criminal, Roni.
At a press briefing on Wednesday afternoon, Additional Commissioner Shafiqul Islam of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Detective Branch (DB) outlined the case. The briefing took place at the DMP Media Center on Minto Road.
Shafiqul Islam stated that five individuals have been arrested in connection with the murder. Among them, Faruk and Robin were the shooters, while Shamim, Rubel, and Yusuf are also in custody. Police recovered the motorcycle used in the attack, firearms, unused bullets, and 153,000 Taka in cash, which Roni had paid to Robin and Faruk as their killing fee.
The DMP chief said that Faruk, Robin, Shamim, and Rubel were apprehended from Narsingdi last night. Following the murder, they had attempted to flee from Dhaka to India via Sylhet, but failing to cross the border there, they planned to enter through Satkhira. They were arrested en route in Narsingdi.
According to the police, after the murder, Faruk and Robin handed the weapons and unused ammunition to Rubel under Roni’s instructions. Rubel, who runs a car rental business, later passed the items to Yusuf, a tailor. Police recovered two foreign pistols, six bullets, and two magazines from Yusuf’s home floor during a raid in Ray’s Bazar.
Regarding the murder plot, Shafiqul Islam explained that tensions between the notorious underworld duo Emon and Mamun had escalated. Roni had planned several attempts on Mamun’s life, all of which failed with Faruk’s assistance. Roni is known to be closely associated with top gangster Sanjamul Islam Emon. The day of the murder was deliberately chosen: Mamun had appeared in court on Monday in a separate Himel murder case.
Describing the killing, Shafiqul Islam said that on the evening of November 9, Roni called Robin to his house, informing him that Faruk, Sumon, Kamal, and others would participate in killing Mamun. He offered Robin payment, which Robin accepted. On the day of the attack, Roni instructed all involved to go to the court area. Robin, accompanied by his friend Shamim, reached the location by motorcycle to carry out the shooting. Although the initial plan was for Sumon and Faruk to fire, ultimately Faruk and Robin carried out the attack.
Following signals provided by Kamal regarding Mamun’s movements, Faruk and Robin opened fire, ensuring Mamun’s death. After the murder, they went to Ray’s Bazar, where, under Roni’s orders, weapons and ammunition were handed to Yusuf. Rubel then distributed the payment of 200,000 Taka between Faruk and Sumon, each receiving 100,000 Taka.
