Facing strong pressure from the players, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has removed M Nazmul Islam from his position as chairman of the board’s Finance Committee.
Until further notice, BCB President Aminul Islam will assume the role of acting head of the Finance Committee, according to an official press release issued this afternoon.
The decision follows protests by cricketers over controversial remarks made by Nazmul. On Wednesday night, the Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) issued an ultimatum demanding his resignation and warned of a match boycott if their demand was not met within a set timeframe. As Nazmul did not step down, players went ahead with a boycott of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) match scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm today.
Later in the afternoon, the players reiterated their demand at another press conference, stating they would not back down and asking the BCB to make a formal decision within 48 hours.
Shortly afterward, the BCB announced that Nazmul had been relieved of his responsibilities on the Finance Committee.
In its statement, the board said the decision was taken after reviewing recent developments and considering the best interests of the organization. It added that the BCB president exercised his authority under Article 31 of the board’s constitution to ensure the smooth and effective functioning of cricket operations.
The press release also confirmed that the BCB president will continue to oversee the Finance Committee until a further announcement is made.
Emphasizing that players’ welfare remains the board’s top priority, the BCB expressed hope that cricketers will show professionalism and commitment during this challenging period and continue their participation in the Bangladesh Premier League for the overall development of Bangladesh cricket.
