ICC to Replace Bangladesh if Team Refuses to Play in India: Board Meeting Decision

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has given Bangladesh one day to communicate its final decision regarding participation in the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup.

After the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) cited security concerns and informed the ICC of its reluctance to send the team to India, the issue was put to a vote at the ICC board meeting today. The board decided that if Bangladesh withdraws, an alternative team will be included in the tournament.

However, before implementing the decision, the ICC has asked the BCB to consult with the Bangladesh government and confirm its final stance within a day, according to sources quoted by Cricinfo.

If Bangladesh ultimately opts out, Scotland could replace them in Group C of the T20 World Cup. Scotland narrowly missed qualification through the European qualifiers, finishing behind the Netherlands, Italy, and Jersey. As the highest-ranked team among those who failed to qualify, Scotland is currently the leading candidate for replacement.

ICC Meeting Underway

The ICC’s virtual board meeting began earlier today, with BCB President Aminul Islam representing Bangladesh.

ICC Chairman Jay Shah is chairing the meeting, attended by senior representatives from major cricket boards, including India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Australia, Zimbabwe, West Indies, Ireland, New Zealand, England, South Africa, and Afghanistan, along with top ICC officials.

What’s on Today’s Agenda

The ICC board is expected to formally present Bangladesh’s firm position on not playing World Cup matches in India due to security concerns, along with Pakistan Cricket Board’s support for Bangladesh’s stance. As the ICC’s apex decision-making body, the board will determine the outcome collectively, with all member boards having the opportunity to express their views on the matter.
