Clashes broke out around a sit-in organized by Inqilab Mancha demanding an impartial investigation under the United Nations into the killing of Shaheed Sharif Osman bin Hadi. During the confrontation, police were seen using batons, firing tear gas canisters, and deploying sound grenades. More than 50 people were injured, including Inqilab Mancha Member Secretary Abdullah Al Jaber.

The incident occurred at around 3:45 pm on Friday near the InterContinental Hotel intersection in the capital. Since Thursday afternoon, Inqilab Mancha activists had been staging a sit-in in two separate locations—outside the Chief Adviser’s residence Jamuna and in front of the InterContinental Hotel—pressing for a UN-led probe into Osman Hadi’s killing. Police had set up barricades at the InterContinental crossing in response.

On Friday, a small group including Osman Hadi’s wife, Rabeya Islam Shampa, continued the sit-in outside Jamuna. Meanwhile, several hundred protesters, led by Abdullah Al Jaber and former Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (RUCSU) General Secretary Salauddin Ammar, gathered in front of the InterContinental Hotel.

Around 3:30 pm, several protesters, including Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) Liberation War and Democratic Movement Affairs Secretary Fatima Tasnim Jhuma, attempted to march from the InterContinental area toward Jamuna. Police stopped them, leading to scuffles.

Following the standoff, protesters at the InterContinental site tried to break through police barricades and advance toward Jamuna, triggering clashes. Police initially used water cannons and later resorted to sound grenades, tear gas, and baton charges. Protesters responded by throwing bottles and bricks at law enforcement.

Among the injured were Abdullah Al Jaber and DUCSU leader Fatima Tasnim Jhuma, along with dozens of others.

Dhaka Medical College Hospital Director Brigadier General Md Asaduzzaman said over 50 injured individuals received treatment at the hospital. He confirmed that none had gunshot wounds, adding that most suffered cuts, bruises, and blunt-force injuries. One person, identified as Mosharraf (32), was admitted for further treatment.

Commenting on the incident, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md Sazzat Ali said protesters attempted to breach barricades and surround Jamuna. He alleged that some protesters climbed onto a water cannon vehicle and tried to damage it, forcing police to take action in the interest of public safety.

After the clashes, around 4:30 pm, Nasiruddin Patwari, an 11-party alliance candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency, arrived at the scene. He and the protesters later marched from the InterContinental area toward Shahbagh, where Inqilab Mancha activists continued their protest into the evening.
