At 10:40 a.m. today, the newly appointed Governor, Md. Mostakur Rahman, arrived at the headquarters of Bangladesh Bank. He was welcomed by three Deputy Governors and other senior officials of the central bank.
After receiving his appointment on Wednesday, Rahman officially assumed office today. Speaking briefly to reporters upon entering the premises, he said, “I’ve arrived; let me begin the work first—there will be time to speak later.”
Sources indicate that during the first half of the day, the new Governor is scheduled to hold meetings with the Deputy Governors, the head of the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU), and the Chief Economist. He will later meet with executive directors. At around 1:30 p.m., he is expected to visit the Secretariat.
On Wednesday, the government canceled the appointment of Ahsan H Mansur and appointed Md. Mostakur Rahman as Governor instead. Rahman holds an FCMA qualification in cost and management accounting and is known as a business professional. This marks the first time a businessperson has been appointed Governor of the country’s central bank.
Rahman will serve as the 14th Governor of Bangladesh Bank. A notification issued by the Financial Institutions Division of the Ministry of Finance stated that, in accordance with the Bangladesh Bank Order, he has been appointed for a four-year term from the date of joining, subject to relinquishing all professional ties with other institutions and organizations. The order, issued in the public interest, takes immediate effect.
Earlier this morning, at approximately 8:30 a.m., Rahman left his residence in Gulshan for the Bangladesh Bank office in Motijheel, traveling in his personal vehicle. Around 10:15 a.m., an official at his Gulshan residence confirmed that he had departed between 8:00 and 8:30 a.m. and made the journey by private car.
