A construction worker lost his life after falling from an under-construction building on the Jahangirnagar University (JU) campus.
The deceased, identified as Md Ariful Islam, had been working on mosaic installation at the university’s new library building when the incident occurred.
According to campus sources, the construction is being handled by Anik Trading Corporation. Ariful reportedly fell from a height during work and sustained critical injuries.
Fellow workers rushed to his aid and initially took him to the university’s medical centre. Due to the severity of his condition, he was later transferred to a private hospital in Savar, where he passed away in the evening while receiving treatment.
Chief engineer of the construction firm, Mominul Karim, confirmed the incident and said that although regular construction had been paused, a few workers were still present on-site. “I was informed around noon that a worker had fallen—likely from losing balance,” he said.
Dr. Ningtam, the on-duty physician at the JU medical centre, noted that Ariful was brought in with severe facial injuries and broken teeth. “Given his critical condition, we immediately referred him to Enam Medical,” the doctor added.
Jahangirnagar University Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan said he was made aware of the incident later that night. “We are taking this matter seriously and will launch a detailed investigation involving all concerned parties,” he stated.
